The word “euthanasia” literally means “good death” and there is no better place than your home for the last gift of love to your pet. Veterinarians are the only medical professional licensed to perform this gift and we know saying goodbye is one of the most difficult and most important times you will have with your pet. At home euthanasia provides the privacy and peace both you and your family deserve in a loving environment.

The veterinarians at MuraBella Animal Hospital take great pride in the ability to make end of life peaceful for your beloved family member. We also understand the pain and suffering you may be feeling at this time. With every visit the veterinarian will take the time to answer any questions, ease any last-minute concerns, or settle any thoughts you or your family may have in a non-judgmental fashion.

Please note: If your pet is not a current patient, we will need copies of medical records for the doctor to review. This allows us confirm that this is a medically appropriate decision for your pet.

What to Expect During an At Home Pet Euthanasia Visit

On arrival, the veterinarian and technician will introduce themselves. Then we will move to the quiet place you have chosen in your home or backyard that you think you and your pet will be most comfortable. They will explain the entire process to you and your family. Once again, please feel free to ask questions at any time. The actual end of life procedure is quite simple and peaceful.

First, a catheter will be placed in your pet’s vein to allow access for the injections. Once the catheter is placed, if your pet is still eating, a few last special treats will be offered, and time will be allowed for the family to say their last goodbyes.  Once everyone is ready your pet will receive two injections. The first injection will be a sedative. This injection is given to ensure that your pet is at peace at the time of euthanasia. Once your pet is ready, a final injection is given that will stop your pet’s heart. The second injection works very rapidly, often in seconds, to ensure your pet passes peacefully. The veterinarian will then confirm that your pet has passed away. Visits typically last 30-60 minutes.

After Care for Your Pet

Any information you may want to know about your pet cremation and return of your pet’s ashes can be discussed in detail with your veterinarian. If MuraBella Animal Hospital is handling transportation to the crematory, once the veterinarian has confirmed your pet has passed, your family will be given a few more moments of privacy. When your family is done visiting, the veterinarian and assistant will return with a basket or a flat stretcher and a blanket to transport your pet to the car.

Lastly, for this very important time for your entire family we only ask that you prepare a quiet place that will be comfortable for the whole family. MuraBella Animal Hospital will take care of everything else. We know that end of life is a difficult time and we thank you for giving us the opportunity to provide the peace your family deserves in the comfort of your home.
